Selling Vintage on Etsy: Compliance Guide

Etsy defines vintage as items that are at least 20 years old. As of 2025, this means items from 2005 or earlier qualify. Listing items that do not meet the age requirement as vintage violates Etsy policy. If you are unsure of an item's age, research hallmarks, manufacturing marks, materials, and construction methods to date it accurately. When in doubt, list the item in another appropriate category.

Honest condition descriptions are essential for vintage items. Disclose all flaws, wear, repairs, and missing parts. Use clear photos showing any damage. Common terms like "excellent vintage condition," "good with minor wear," or "as-is for repair" should be used consistently. Undisclosed defects lead to returns, disputes, and negative reviews.

Some items are prohibited on Etsy regardless of their vintage status. This includes items made from endangered species (ivory, tortoiseshell), certain weapons, and items containing hazardous materials. Vintage items with recalled components (e.g., cribs, car seats) also cannot be sold. Always check Etsy's prohibited items list before listing vintage goods.

For designer, branded, or high-value vintage items, authenticity is critical. Etsy prohibits counterfeit goods regardless of age. If you sell vintage designer items, be prepared to demonstrate authenticity. Include clear photos of labels, markings, and construction details. If you cannot verify authenticity, state this clearly rather than making unsubstantiated claims.
