Etsy Vintage Policy: Rules for Selling Vintage Items

Etsy defines vintage items as those that are at least 20 years old. As of 2025, this means items must have been made in 2005 or earlier to qualify for the Vintage category. This rolling threshold updates every year, so items from the mid-2000s are now entering vintage eligibility. The 20-year rule applies to the item itself, not to the style, pattern, or design aesthetic. A brand-new item manufactured today in a retro or vintage style does not qualify for the Vintage category, even if it perfectly replicates a historical design. Conversely, a mass-produced item from the 1990s does qualify as vintage based on its age, regardless of whether it was originally considered special or collectible. This policy exists to create a clear, objective standard that is easy for sellers, buyers, and Etsy's enforcement team to apply. While some vintage communities use different age thresholds (such as 25 or 50 years for "antique"), Etsy's 20-year standard is the only one that matters for listing compliance on the platform.

Documenting the age of vintage items is important both for compliance and buyer confidence. The best evidence includes manufacturer markings, date stamps, patent numbers, and labels that can be cross-referenced with historical production records. Including clear photos of these identifying marks in your listing helps buyers verify authenticity. When exact dates are not available, you can use contextual clues to establish an approximate age. Manufacturing techniques, material composition, design elements, hardware styles, and brand history can all help date an item. For example, specific zipper types were used in different decades, certain fabric compositions were popular in particular eras, and company logos changed over time. In your listing description, include as much age-related information as possible. State the approximate era or decade (e.g., "circa 1985" or "1970s era"). Describe the evidence that supports your dating, such as "marked 'Made in West Germany,' indicating production before 1990" or "features the pre-1998 brand logo." This level of detail demonstrates your knowledge and helps buyers make informed decisions.

When creating a vintage listing, select the "Vintage" option under the "Who made it?" section, then choose "A vintage item" from the available options. This places your listing in the Vintage category and applies vintage-specific attributes. Do not list vintage items under Handmade unless you have significantly modified or upcycled them. Your listing title should include the word "vintage" along with a descriptor of the era or decade when known. Effective vintage titles follow a pattern like: "Vintage [Era/Decade] [Brand if applicable] [Item Description] [Key Feature]." For example: "Vintage 1960s Pyrex Butterfly Gold Casserole Dish with Lid." This format helps with search visibility and immediately communicates the item's vintage status. One of the most common mistakes on Etsy is confusing vintage-style items with genuinely vintage items. A new product made in a retro or vintage aesthetic (often described as "vintage-inspired," "vintage-look," "retro-style," or "mid-century modern style") does not belong in the Vintage category, regardless of how closely it resembles a historical piece. Vintage-style items should be listed under the Handmade or Craft Supplies category as appropriate. You can absolutely use terms like "vintage-inspired" or "retro-style" in your title and tags to help buyers who are searching for that aesthetic, but the listing category must reflect what the item actually is: a new, handmade product. Etsy monitors for miscategorized items, and listings that place new products in the Vintage category may be flagged and removed. Repeated miscategorization can result in account warnings. If you sell both genuine vintage items and vintage-inspired new items, keep them clearly separated in your listings with accurate categorization for each.

Beyond the vintage-style miscategorization issue, sellers sometimes list items that are close to but not yet 20 years old in the Vintage category. A product from 2008, for example, does not currently qualify as vintage on Etsy. It is the seller's responsibility to verify that items meet the age requirement, and "close enough" does not satisfy the policy. Another common issue is failing to provide condition information. Vintage items inherently carry the possibility of wear, age-related damage, or missing components. Buyers expect and accept this, but they need to know about it before purchasing. Failing to disclose condition issues leads to returns, negative reviews, and potential policy complaints. Sellers also sometimes over-restore vintage items without disclosure. While cleaning and basic restoration are expected and appreciated, extensive modifications that alter the character of the item should be disclosed. If you have repainted, reupholstered, or replaced significant components of a vintage piece, describe these modifications clearly. Some buyers specifically seek unrestored pieces, while others prefer restored items, but all buyers deserve accurate information.
